What’s it about?

92% of teens go online daily. Of those, 52% are online several times per day, and 26% are online almost constantly. With stats like that, it’s no wonder parents, in increasing numbers, are concerned about their teens’ use of social media. Maybe you or someone you love has already had a negative experience. Maybe you’re just worried and want to prepare your child for what may happen online. Either way, if you’ve ever tried to talk to your teen about their use of social media, you know how quickly that conversation becomes, well, disconnected.

That’s why we created the Social Media Conversation Kit! Using the power of storytelling, we introduce readers to some truths about the online world in an engaging and effective way.

Included is the chilling short story, “bamNI,” which stands for Body and Mind Network Integration. The story is about a possible future for social media where teens have network technology installed directly on their bodies and brains. Some students resist the trend, but the social pressure proves too much: Those on bamNI were a part of something nobody else was.

They occupied their own space. They played by their own rules … we had no way of knowing what was happening in there. It was the most exclusive club in school. And there is nothing like a closed door to make people want to get on the other side.

When that permanent, physical access to the internet proves to be too much to handle, the characters are left to wonder where their boundaries with social media should lie.

Also included in the kit is an interactive journal with amazing worksheets designed to promote a deeper understanding of social media, its scientifically-proven addictive nature, and its effect on relationships and on the brain. At the same time, the kit offers solutions for change, ranging from healthy new mini-habits to total mobile device overhauls. For teachers, there’s a lesson plan that includes recommendations for how you might use the Social Media Conversation Kit in your classroom.
