Why is anxiety taking over my child?
A long time ago worry helped our ancestors survive in a dangerous environment. If they detected a Saber-toothed cat in the grass, their worry system would put them on alert and signal them to skedaddle or else become lunch. This is called the negativity bias and it’s a good thing. It kept our ancestors alive so they passed it down to us.
Fortunately, we live in a much safer world now with house cats instead of saber-toothed ones. Our worry system doesn’t need to be on high alert all the time.
Children with anxiety are CONSTANTLY on high alert and seeking out danger even when there is no danger. They are unnecessarily putting themselves in fight or flight mode. This is why children with anxiety are nervous, jittery, moody, unfocused, need constant reassurance, don’t sleep well, are overly self-critical or hypersensitive.
In short, they are not in control of their own worry.
A little-discussed aspect of childhood anxiety is this: you feel helpless as a parent. You’re not able to talk your child out of worrying no matter what you say. You’ve tried positive reinforcement. You’ve tried downplaying anxiety-causing situations. You’ve even tried bribing… And more than once you’ve felt frustrated enough to yell.

Hi, I’m Renee Jain.
I'm the founder and Chief Storyteller here at GoZen! I grew up worried. At age 5, I begged my parents to let me sleep with my brother’s plastic bat because I was so worried that when I went to sleep, a robber would break in.
I know all too well what it’s like to live with anxiety as a child.
Even in my twenties, I continued to struggle until one day I had a panic attack in my office. As I lay gasping for breath, I decided enough was enough. I wasn’t going to let anxiety control my life any longer. I spent several years investing time in self-education, talk therapy and then a master’s in psychology.
Through both formal education and personal experience, one very clear truth emerged: Resilience is a skill.
While some of us are born more resilient, others simply need to master this ability with practice (and, yes, it can be practiced)! We can help kids cultivate basic coping techniques to overcome anxiety as well as life skills to find meaning, purpose, and engagement in their lives.
